Follow some simple tips to pick right boxing gloves for you;

What type of activity you will be doing:
Do an online search of boxing gloves, and you'll get more results returned than you know what to do with! First of all, you need to determine the purpose of your gloves. Are they for full contact boxing? Martial arts sparring? Training? Bag work? Aerobic kick boxing? Establish which kind of fighting you plan on participating in first. Then look at the various styles, sizes and weights.

Right size and weight:
Glove size and glove weight are not the same thing. In many cases the sizing does correspond with the weight of the glove, however this is not always true. You will pick the WEIGHT of the glove depending on your chosen method of use. You will often choose SIZE depending on the best fit of the glove.

The most common sizes for gloves run small, medium and large. The most common sizes for gloves are:
• 8 oz. - common for competitive boxers
• 10 oz. - common for competitive boxers
• 12 oz. - common for women and people with small hands for training
• 14 oz. - common for average size people for training
• 16 oz. - common for people of all sizes for training
• 18 oz. - commonly used for larger weight classes for training
• 20 oz. - commonly used for larger weight classes for training

You will be able to find weights ranging from 10 to 20 ounces. In most professional boxing matches, the fighters usually wear 10 oz gloves. However, for training purposes, most gloves weigh 12 oz, 14 oz, and 16 oz. The heavier the glove, the more protection it offers. For beginners, 14 oz and 16 oz gloves are recommended. For sparring purposes, 16 oz boxing gloves are standard.

Get the right size. Most gloves are sized small, medium and large sizes. On average, men will wear large, women will wear medium and youth will wear small. Of course this will vary if one has exceptionally large or small mitts. Some manufacturers also vary slightly, but for the most part the sizing is fairly standardized.
When choosing glove size you want the gloves to have a snug fit. If there is too much room inside for your hands to move around, there is potential for injury.

Two important things to note when choosing glove size
1. The glove will stretch - like a good pair of shoes. The more you use them, the more they will stretch to fit your hand. So the best gloves for you will probably not fit perfectly when they are brand new. You might want to consider buying them to be a little tighter fitting than you think.
2. Make sure there is room for hand wraps. Do not buy gloves without wrapping your hands and trying them on. It is very important for you to wear hand wraps and you do not want to get your new gloves and realize after the fact that they won't fit while you are wearing your hand wraps.

Another factor to consider is the closure on the glove; do you prefer Velcro or laces? The classic style boxing gloves that you always see in prize fights are tied on with laces. Just like lacing up your shoes, laces provide a nice snug fit. It takes two people to get lace up gloves on.

The advantage to buying a pair of boxing gloves with Velcro straps is that you can easily put on the gloves, and remove them yourself. If you have ever tried to lace a pair of gloves when nobody is around, it is almost impossible. For your average person and general training purposes, gloves with Velcro straps are very acceptable.
